THE DESIGNERS PERSPECTIVE: THE MOST COMMON TILE MISTAKES WE SEE IN RENOVATIONS, AND HOW TO AVOID THEM

A Tuesday Lane x TileZu Collaboration

“Tiles can completely transform a space but they can also instantly date it if the wrong decisions are made. Often the most mistakes happen before installation even begins”

Tiles should enhance a space, not overwhelm it. the difference lies in the details.

1. Choosing the wrong grout colour

People often treat grout as an afterthought but it can completely change how a tile presents in a space.

Things to avoid:
-        High contrast grout can look busy or overly harsh. Don’t get us wrong, there is definitely a time and place for this but often it can be quite jarring.
-          Light grout in high traffic areas which can show stains
-          Mismatched tones making the tiling look unintentional and can also throw off the colour scheme

Designer Tips:
-          To create a seamless, high end look match the grout colour to the tile colour
-          Use slightly darker grout for floors
-          Only use contrast grout if you want to highlight the pattern

2. Over tiling the space

Tiling every possible surface when not necessary or required can create an uninviting space that feels cold and flat. It can also make premium or feature tiles lose their impact

Designer Tips
-          Let tiles feature, not dominate
-          Balance the use of tiles with timber, paint, cladding or texture to create warmth and softness
-          Use tiles strategically – one feature wall, not all four

3. Selecting a tile before thinking about the layout

Selecting and purchase a tile before you understand how it will be laid or the impact of the pattern you are hoping to achieve, for example, choosing a subway tile laid in a herringbone format but not thinking about the joins or cuts that will be required in your space.

Things to avoid:
-          Awkward cuts in visible areas
-          Misaligned grout lines with fixtures such as a shower, toilet etc
-          Wasted material and higher install costs

Designer Tips
-          Always design the layout first, then choose a suitable tile
-          Consider the tile size vs room proportions for example, if you have a very small powder room, you should avoid a large 600x1200mm tile

Think about where cuts will fall in regards to the alignment of joinery, niches, windows etc

Luckily, when you hire a designer or speak to a professional who is experienced in both selling tiles and also laying tiles you won’t have to think much about these things. Your contractors will do the heavy lifting and bring these things to your attention before they are purchased and become an issue.

Planning your selections early will save you time, money and costly mistakes.
